Should I get clipless pedals and shoes for my new Trek bike?

Should I get clipless pedals and shoes for my new Trek bike?

If you are just riding for fun, no. If you are doing some real road riding or mountain biking, I'd say yes, they are worth the investment. Locking your feet in place helps reduce the amount of extra movement your foot makes on the pedal itself, so the transfer of energy into your cranking is much more effective. It took a while for me to get used to the clipless pedals, but once I did I found myself able to ride parts of trails much more easily than I was able to before with just toe clips.
Definitely! While they may take a little time getting used to them, they are well worth the effort.
If I were mountain biking up and down trails I would go with studded platforms. If I had a road bike I would definitely go clipless. If I were just going to use my bike on bike paths at a leisurely pace, I would go with regular pedals.
No. Don't spend money that you might regret losing. Start out with regular pedals. If you find that you really enjoy the riding and that you want to go to the next level, then buy them.
Yes, a good clipless pedal system, like Shimano's SPD will help with both effeciency and efectiveness.

Plus with the SPD, you can wear pretty much a regular show with a recess for the cleat.

Good luck
