How to teach a 3 yr old to pedal a bike? |
Ive been trying to teach my 3 yr old to ride a bike with training wheels, but he cant seem to grasp the concept of continuing to pedal, or keeping his feet on the pedals...is he too young? how can i teach him to keep his feet on the pedals and keep pushing them in a circle? ive tried a lot of things...pushing the bike and having his feet just rest on the pedals so he gets the feel for how they go around...holding the back wheel up and having him pedal...and trying to push his feet while he rides...and none have worked...any tips? He may not have the coordination for this just yet ... it's kind of a complex motor skill to master. If it's getting frustrating for him, set it aside and try again in another few months. Sometimes that's all it takes, just a bit more time. we had the training wheels elevated so our son could pedal the bike freely in one place just so he can get his rhythm down, and it's a piece of cake after that. At this age, he may do better with one of those little bikes that they sit on and scootch along with their feet. He may be a bit young for pedals yet. ~mother of 7~ keep trying!! the only other idea i have is to push down on his knees to pedal instead of his feet. it worked for my son. show him that as he pushes his leg down, the bike goes forward. maybe start a small reward if he gets it right. he may just need a little more motivation! good luck use zip ties to hold his feet on and if he still cant get it he's just not ready We had the same thing happen with my 3 yr old son, and I think it just happened to be that he wasnt ready yet. I would do as someone else suggested, and just give it a bit more time. GIve him a break from it for a while or it will become frustrating and he wont enjoy it. All kids are different, my second boy loves to ride my 3 year olds pedal bike and hes only 18 months, but my 3 1/2 year old still isnt interested. |
