Vintage Huffy 5 speed problem? |
I just bought a really nice vintage huffy 5 speed from the local thrift shop for $7.50. I bought it to flip, and resell on Craigslist. Their is one problem i found which i probably think is no big deal. Whenever the bicycle is in its highest gear, the chain jumps when you pedal or freewheel backwards. Any suggestions? There are a couple reasons for this. First, you should never pedal a bike with a derailleur backwards. The derailleur guides the chain in the right direction and when you pedal backwards, well, there is no derailleur so the chain tends to hop off the top of the freewheel.. Second, it could be that the freewheel needs to be lubricated. I normally don't recommend using motor oil, but to do this it's probably the best thing. Lay the bike on its side and drip 3 or 4 drops of oil into the freewheel body while the rear wheel spins slowly. Third, and most likely is that the chain is shot. Replace it with the correct size and length chain. Source(s): 26 years in the industry You deserve the problem for buying and selling a HUFFY (junky bike, my friend....). It is a deraileur adjustment issue if it jumps in the HIGHEST gear only. Deraileurs have a upper and lower min and max setting, which limites the range of the deraileur. You need to adjust the upper limit slightly. |
