Crank keeps spinning when I pedal?

My crank or pedals keep spinning when i crank up the bike. When i hold the pedals from spinning the wheel comes to a quick stop.

You need to check the bearings in the crank. Try cleaning and re-packing if they are still together. If not you will need new ones.
the problem is probably your bottom bracket. The bearings could be shot - if that is the case, just replace it. Almost al BB's are now cartridge, which means you replace it when its done.
It could also be too tight, in which case you just need to loosen it. Either way, you'll need a crank puller, and a BB tool. Might be best to bring it into a shop. Most likely its too tight.

***if it was the cassette/freewheel, then the chain would keep spinning foreward and kind of bunch up (known to happen with mavic ksyriums a lot).. what you are describing is "ghost pedaling", and is caused by the BB.
Has nothing to do with the crank. Your freewheel or cassette on the back wheel is frozen. It will need to be replaced because the guts are probably destroyed.
