Shifting Problem?

I was riding my mtn bike today when I noticed that the rear shifter was not working properly. When I upshift, nothing happens till I go through about three clicks and then it skips 2 or 3 gears, getting harder to click as I progress through the gears. The highest gear I can reach is what would normally be the 2nd to highest. Once I have reached this gear, the shifter will not "click" if I try to reach top gear (gear w/most pedal resistance). I looked at the rear derailleur and nothing looks bent. I am using shimano deore shifters with an XT rear deraillleur. The bike is only about 1 week old. I adjusted the cable a little although there was very little slack to begin with. It shifts a little better now (I think) but it stilll gets harder to shift as the gears get higher and still skips a gear or 2 occasionally.

Yes, I am pedaling and by "upshift", I mean shifting into a higher gear with more pedal resistance.

1) If the bike has recently fallen on it's side, it could very well be a bent derailleur hanger which really isn't noticeable without the proper alignment tools to diagnose it... most shops have dropout alignment tools;

2) It sounds as if you have a "low (big sprocket) normal" or "Rapid Rise" derailleur. XT is available but Deore is not, so if this is the case then the XT is not compatible with the Deore shifters. Easy way to check this is if the cable "pulls" to get it into high (little sprocket) gear then you have a low normal derailleur.

3) If you have a "high normal" derailleur and the dropout alignment is good then there are 2 other possibilities... If the cassette is a 10 speed then the shifters are not compatible... Deore is not available in 10. It could also mean that the shifters could be 8 speed and you have a 9 speed rear. Just count the rear sprockets and the "clicks" on your shifter. The other possibility is that the limit screws on the derailleur are not set correctly. I would suggest that you have the shop where you bought the bike check it.

If you bought the bike used or online it could very well be that the rear derailleur, or the shifters, were just thrown on to sell the bike. This is more common than I care to think.

EDIT:

To those that don't read entire questions... this is the second go-round for this question. The asker already adjusted the cables and some other stuff. The real clue is that he looked to see if anything was bent, and that it skips gears, and that XT can be 9 and 10 speed while Deore is 8 or 9 speed. Source(s): 27 years in the industry
There are a few possibilities as to why your not shifting properly. You hit on a few.
- A bent derailleur can cause shifting problems.
- Old or rusty cables tend to stretch when you shift rather than transferring the energy to the derailleur to cause it to shift. In this situation, it takes a few gear shifts before the derailleur responds because once you have stretched the cable enough it responds.
- the Derailleur may be out of adjustment. There are typically 2 adjustment screws on the derailleur. Even the slightest adjustment could mess it all up. This can be fixed with lots of patience and a keen eye. It may be worth dropping with the local bike shop.

Based on the lack of response in shifting, I would guess that there is an issue with the shifting cable itself. Either rusted, worn, or not properly installed (check the tension and fastening screw.)
Good Luck
Wait! The clue is in the fact that it was stated the bike is ONE WEEK OLD. There are no warn or rusty parts, no bent derailleurs.
New cables stretch and that is normal. Every bike needs to be adjusted after a normal "run-in" period. Any bike shop will adjust a new bike around 30 days from purchase FREE.
Take it back to where you bought it (provided it was a bike dealer) and they will be happy to fix it for you.
