How do you track your "cadance" while your biking?

Is it simply another word for your speed or if its what it sounds like, the rotatations of your pedal relative to your speed, how do you monitor that? I don't think I'm coordinated enough to count and ride at the same time.

High cadence with an efficient stroke is the key to power, whether you want to sprint, climb hills, or just ride all day.

Once you learn your cadence, you'll know it forever. I suggest a standard bike computer, or even a watch with a second hand secured to your handlebar. On a flat, straight road with no traffic, watch the second hand for 6 seconds. Count your pedal strokes for those 6 seconds. Look up! Your cadence is the number you counted x 10. Easy and cheap! It will take a few months of feedback for your muscles to memorize the new cadence.

Now, how to increase your cadence to the recommended 90-100 turns/minute? Toe clips or clipless pedals are a must, or else your feet will fly off the pedals. Start riding in your lowest gear and practice turning the pedals even faster than 100. Can you make 120? Now, add some resistance by going uphill or shifting.

Now, how to smooth that stroke? I found that the best way to smooth out my pedal stroke is to turn the pedals very *slowly*. Put the bike in the fastest gear and ride up a long steep hill. Go back to the bottom. Take the left foot off the pedal and focus on smoothing out the right. Go back to the bottom and switch. Try to give each leg the same "push" at all times through the pedal stroke. Most people progress from learning to pull up, adding the top and bottom (like scraping mud off your shoe) to pedal "a box," to pedaling a true circle.

It takes lots of practice. But it's worth it when you're able to power away from your group and still look cool. Source(s): Lots of articles, plus Greg Lemond's book, taught me everything I know.
there are many bicycle computers on the market that track road speed, time, and cadence
some of the more expensive ones have heart rate monitors built in
go to your local bike shops and check em out
for a relatively inexpensive cyclometer that will track cadence, speed, avg. speed, distance etc. look to performance bike, either a store near you, or online. They sell a model DB 4LW when its on sale for about $25. simple set up and pretty good all around unit.

I hava a Garmin Edge 305 that tracks a bunch of stuff, including cadence.

The low tec way (works best on a trainer) is to spin focusing on one foot rotation for 30 seconds and multiply the nubber by 2. then you have your rotation sper minute.
