Could I build a helicopter with the main propulsion system being pedaling?

I am trying to build a helicopter out of a couple of old mountain bikes. I don't want to get very high, because of the saftey issue, but is it possibleto get somewhat of a lift-off?

Sorry to disappoint you, but we are not strong enough for that.

In short we dont have the power to weight ratio for the task. You will need some source of external power to aid you for a lift off.
Yes -- google 'The Kremer Prize'. Keep in mind that these units may be man-powered but are totally impractical.
Been done before but its not a helicopter, its a gyrocopter, look it up and you would be amazed the lift you can get
actually yes u can
Gonna take some strong quadracepts.
with strong legs you might do that. and a good mechanical knowledge plus some expensive helicopter blades, and alot more costly parts, good luck
You're gonna need a really efficient gearbox
