What is the name of a book about a little boy that goes to live with an older man?

I read a book in middle school about a young boy that goes to live with an older man. I can remember if they were related or not but at some point in the book the boy goes back to live with his mom who locks him in the closet with his baby brother. When they are found the young boy is holding the baby who is dead. The boy has a friend that is a girl and they go on a bike ride or something like that. I cant really remember much about it cause it was almost 10 years ago that read the book. If you have any idea what I am talking about please help me I never got to finish the book and I would really like too. Thank you
