I lost my bike key. cant cut lock. wut do i do?

i lost my key. what do i do?

Unless you wrote down your key number or registered your lock/keys with the manufacturer, you're probably just going to have to cut it off.

Use an electric or air angle grinder and spend 10-20 minutes hacking away. (Assuming you have a u-lock here, but it's still the best option for padlocks, too.) They make thin cutting wheels for grinders, but I'd recommend a 1/8" grinding wheel instead....safer for this purpose because of the quality of the metal in the lock.

Don't waste your time with bolt cutters. 36" cutters still won't get through a u-lock. They make 42" cutters but the metal in u-locks is hard enough that you'll probably break the jaws....if you do, they cost $60 to $80 to replace the jaws. Plus, getting enough leverage (even with two people pulling in opposite directions) is hard to do. Much, much easier to use a grinder.

Some thieves use a small 2- or 4-ton bottle jack to force apart the lock.....you could try that, too, but I'd let that be your last resort because parts can fly and it's easy to damage the bike frame.

Good luck....and better luck next time hanging on to the keys! lol :o)

If it's a U-Lock brand you can contact U-Lock via the website and maybe get a key for it! Did you register your U-Lock? If not maybe you can go to the store you bought it and inquire if they can look it up?

Gather whatever info you can and try to contact the mfg. If it's no go - I recommend a lock smith over trying to remove the lock yourself - particularly if there is a bike attached!

You can only cut a U-Lock with a ton of effort and most thieves use leverage to break them open. Destructive!

A cutting torch would be very effective in a situation such as this.

You can rent 3' bolt cutters...Seriously...
