2001 Yamaha R1 suddenly won't start???? HELP!?

Hello,

As stated above, I have a 2001 Yamaha R1. Ran beautifully unitl now. Not a single hiccup. Regular maintainence. Drove it to work, and when I got off it would not start. Cranked and cranked but no fire. Tried bump starting, but to no avail. What could of possibly happened? Bike was locked up, so you can rule out tampering. Have bike torn down now, and am desperately looking for advice on what to look for. Thanks so much!

Regarding the answer below: No I am not a trained tech, but after owning a dozen or so bikes, I feel pretty compotent about fixing bikes. Just looking for suggestions while I test the first things that come to mind. As far as "torn down" I mean I have the tank off and the carbs exposed so I could check spark and fuel.

First thing I would do is charge your battery on a battery tender. After that, if it cranks but doesn't start, I would make sure the carb is clean and the air filter is unobstructed. I would also check to make sure you have a strong spark. Sometimes you'll see spark but it won't be enough to start anything. Lastly, check your ignition module. It may need to be replaced. Invest in a multimeter ($20 at Home Depot) if you don't already have one.

If your battery was the problem, you might have something wrong with your charging circuit. Or you could have a short that will drain it over time.

Before you get too deep into your tear down, check this. Theres a fuse that controls all the fire recieve thru your wiring horness. On the R1 its under the batery box. Trust me just check it, save yourself some frustration. It sounds simple , but because of where it is located its the hardest proble to diagnose unless you go to the shop and they put it on a diagnostic. I know this because my r1 did the same this. I have a busa now and that baby did it after a long ride one day, so before i did anythin i checked it and guess what, lol. All the current constantly going thru the harness make it heat up and the fuse will pop sometimes, and its no fire after that.

Main fuse, Is it firing I didnt notice if you said it is or not ?

was anything left on while you were at work?

Ok. So it's cranking over but not firing. With limited info let's
start with the basics: We need to check 2 things 1) is it fuel starvation or 2) is there any spark.

1) I can't remember if the 01 R1 is fuel injected (i think it is right?). follow the fuel system all the way from the tank to the motor and ensure there's flow (sometimes the petcot fuel switch can get clogged). If you can verify that there's fuel going in the go to 2.

2) There is a firing computer chip that may be fried. Or, as odd as it sounds check that no fuses are blown. I think there's a master fuse outside of the fuse box under the seat you should check too.

Call the dealers and ask them if there's a way to check whether the computer chip is bad.

Sorry I'm not much help.. Goodluck

I had a similar prob and ended up finding I had bad gas.

what do you mean you have it torn down.
you should have taken it to the yamaha dealer and let them fix it. are you a trained
motorcycle tech. i don't think you know what
you are doing. you really should take the
bike to the dealer before you screw it up
any more then it is.
