Does bicycles gear get damaged if they are moved when the bike is not moving.?

Is there anyway to lock them?

No, nothing bad will happen if you shift without pedaling or moving. This is because all shifting does is pull on the cable or let some cable go which, in turn, pulls on the derailleur or lets it resume its more natural position. Whether you're riding and shifting or you're shifting while not riding, there isn't much difference. The only damage shifting while not pedaling can cause is cable stretch if you have fairly new cables. Cable stretch will throw off your derailleur's precision but this can be fixed with a simple tuning of the derailleur without using any tools usually. It reason it can stretch your cables is because you shift to a larger gear, it momentarily pulls on the cable before the derailleur moves. When you're not pedaling, the derailleur doesn't move and the cable continues to be pulled. This isn't much of a concern since your cables are bound to be stretched one day anyway. So, despite cable strectch, there isn't any harm to shifting non-moving gears.

This question has been asked at least twice before.

NO, there will be no damage to the bike if you move the shifter when the bike is not moving unless the person who moves the shifter breaks it off. YES, I am absolutely sure.

Can you STOP asking this F**king question.

LOOK - Remember what gear the bike is in when you lock it up. If some idiot has changed them, put them back to where they were, meaning the chain won't have to jump around.

no its a misconception, just to keep kids away form doing it.... it takes the same wear as it would if used when moving, actually a little less to be right....
