Does long term drink and drug use affect memory?

I was wondering if other people exp. this. I lost 2 bicycles 'cos I dont remember where I locked them. Last night I cycled to the College but walked home, then remembered that I left my bike there. I have been clean and sober and stopped taking medication but I still forget things, is this a common side-affect from too much marijuana?

Let me tell you a story -

totally, i smoked for a long time years, and my short term memory is sh-t, a bit like yours bye the sound of it. i have not smoked it in about 10 years but it still has an effect

Didn't you pay attention to ANYTHING being said about drugs when you were younger??? Of course... it can have a affect on anything you do. Do you know how many brain cells you've burned up just to get a little high? WOW

People are complicated chemical factories; everybody reacts differently and has different resistance levels. You may meet some people who tell you they are long term or heavy users of various substances with no ill effects at all. That could be true for them, but there are no guarantees that it will be true for you.

The only way to be completely sure you are not at risk from negative side effects of drugs and alcohol is not to use them. If you decide to use them, you can try to find a level that works for you and lets you live your life around your substance use, but you cannot ever know if there are long term side effects unless you know in advance exactly how your particular body and brain chemistry will react.

Yes. The regular use of MJ affects the memory. Maybe u have to stop it for a month?

Definitely YES it does.
Both drugs and alcohol taken in excess especially over a number of yrs causes brain cells to die which obviously affects the memory to differing degrees depending on how long the stub stance and alcohol abuse has taken place for and the amount consumed. The memory usually gets better as the yrs pass but you have short lapses in memory where you can't remember past incidents your forgetfulness however will get better.

misuse of any psychoactive substances can impair memory,such as marijuana etc.excessive drinking can over years along with poor nutritional intake cause permanent memory loss(short term memory),a condition known as kosakoffs psychosis.this is primarily due to vitamin b1,(thiamine deficiency) which in turn causes petechial haemorrhaging in part of the brain known as the mammilary bodies,responsible for short term memory.
