Sticky rear drum - what's the fix?

My motorcycle's rear drum brake has started sticking/dragging when I apply too much brake, like 50% pressure or more. It will either drag or lock until the bike comes to a complete stop, then it will release and be free. Its odd to me because it only drags when moving, but once I stop, it easily frees up.

I'm planning on opening the drum up, but wondering if anyone else has experienced this and may know what the problem may be.

The bike is a 1985 Honda Magna VF500C, so I'm assuming something may be rusty or in need of lubrication...

Most of the time it's the actuator cam corroded where it goes thru brake backing plate.

Take it apart,,clean the Hole and the Cam,,,polish them with some med-fine wet/dry paper,,,180~220

Grease it MODESTLY with some Hi-Temp "Disc Brake " wheel bearing grease.

Worn Shoes will indeed allow overtravel and wedging,,,so check them also.
On an '85,,,I'd replace the shoes arbitrarily

yes I would say tear it apart and make sure it is lubed up really good. also if your brake shoes are wore down too far it will allow your braking arm to swing to far and get stuck.

The internal return springs may be broken or have stretched. Also the brake cable may be sticking. Check the cable if it's good just buy some new pads with the springs and a can of carb cleaner.

most cases the shoes are worn out causing the brake cam to over extend. there is a marker on the brake cam arm that when the brake is applied will point to a marker on the brake backing plate a dot on the cam corresponsds with a mark on the arm the rod is connected to coming from your pedal a good idea is to take brake cam out and clean it this can cause same problem . Honda mech and owner of 20 years

has the bike been sitting, start by checking all the internal drum parts, If it looks tired replace it. also be carefull not to lube things up to much as the grease may end up on the shoes and cause the brakes to fail. the problem could also exist in the juice caliper a worn or mishapen caliper piston can also cause locking brakes
