Extra bike security??

I live in kind of a party house, and although the roommate that was causing problems isn't allowed to have people over any longer, I still worry about my bike constantly, espically when I park it in a public place (school, restraunt, even work).

It's got good frame sliders and handlebar ends so if it gets knocked over it probably won't do too much damage (which certainly doesn't make it ok), I'm more worried about someone trying to break off my steering lock and starting the engine.

What aftermarkets can I get to make me feel safer, or am I just being paranoid?

An alarm does me no good because I'm normally parked quite a way from my bike, and at home I can alwas hear it start anyhow.

I was thinking about some sort of kill switch, but it seems inconvient, and expensive.

Any ideas help
Thanks,

The bike is an 03 GSX-R 1000

Lock it to something like a tree or a pole.
You could put your own hidden ignition kill switch on for 75 cents. Simply bridge any ignition wire with a hidden switch from radio shack or auto zone.

There are alarms( like the Gorilla) that have a pager, if your alarm goes off ,you get paged.

But I'm a back to the basics kind of guy, a 1" cable locked to a tree or pole is pretty damn safe.

I think they make LoJack for bikes now but read the fine print carefully if you are considering it. Lots of stipulations and it's not cheap.

I don't leave my bike parked where I can't see it and keep it in a storage facility overnight.

the bottom line is if a professional thief wants your bike he's going to get it.
steering locks do not break that easy.
don't bother with a kill switch more trouble
then it is worth. one easy thing you can do is
after you park your bike is to pull out the
main fuse. no fuse no start.

You can install an alarm w/pager, so it contacts you if someones on the bike or bumps it.

Kill switch is ok, but anyone who knows bikes can over rule one.

a cheap lock is a padlock on the brake rotor, but if you forget to take it off, helloooo pavement.

Add an extra kill switch up under the tank or somewhere else out of sight. It won't keep them from throwing it in the back of a pickup and taking it but they won't be able to break your steering lock and start it. A small flip switch is cheap and would be easy to install.

Check out the Kryptonite" barbwire" cable. Best security system I've found.

Get a cable with a lock on it that is steel and you can wrap it around the rear tire and up over the seat so you don't forget its on.

Also there are Wheel locks but its dangerous as it can damage your bike if you forget its on and you take off. It locks on the wheel so I don't like those.

The best deterrent to theft in my opinion is weight. For example a zx10 or Suzuki Katana weigh about 500lbs so they are harder to steal than say a Ninja 600 at 340 lbs approx or a ninja 250 at 300+ lbs.

Best bet would be to just use a mixture of the ones listed. Put on a lock and pull the main fuse, Lock the fork and pull the plug wires off the plugs. If someone wants it, they'll want it quickly and any deterant will slow them up and make them nervous. Also get in the habit of shutting off the gas petcock if you have one. If they do ride off they won't go far and will most likely panic and just leave the bike, not even thinking.

go to walmart and by some bike locks !

well first off, you can get an alarm that also has a pager you keep with you to tell you when someone is messing with your bike. Second, if they want it bad enough, they will get it. All the locks and kill switches in the world, won't stop em if they want it bad enough. Heck, 4 guys can pick one up and set it in a trailer and drive off. You need a good loud audible alarm to attract attention if it is messed with. Gte a good brake caliper lock for the front wheel, but make sure you get one that has a bright colored lanyard that goes up to your hand grip so you don't forget it is locked on and hurt yourself or the bike by trying to drive away with it on. You can buy some good quality locks and chains, but you are not always parked by something safe to lock it too. Trust me, I ride $25,000.00 Harley's. I know what I'm talking about. All you can do is cut the odds, and make it as difficult as possible. My alarm, in addition to being audible, setting off my pager, will also auto arm when I am 10 feet away and if it is messed with, it kills all electrical power to the bike.
Good luck

ruger, smith&wesson, glock all make good security devices

There is a Lo-jack system for motorcycles which I happen to have installed in my Harley. I too used to live in a not so secure area.
