How long does a bicycle last in London without getting 'nicked'?

I've seen the thieves working, theres no lock that they cant break! How can London be a cycle friendly city if bikes always get stolen? Ive had 3 stolen in a short space of time, one only lasted a week! I decided to buy a second hand bike, for all I know it could be a stolen bike! How are people in London going to be encouraged to cycle if their bikes always get 'nicked'?

Take steps to make your bike less desireable. Locking it up is a good start. Mess with your bike's appearance; spray paint parts bright orange or something. Park it in crowded areas, or, if possible, lock it up next to a bunch of other (more attractive) bikes. Most bikes now have an easily detacheable front tire; if you're desperate, you can remove that and carry it inside with you. Or you can remove the seat, too, or both.

Same problem here in Liverpool..

Just ride a really nasty looking bike, one that would be the lada of the bicycle world.
