My 12 year old niece's knee catches and locks up on her. she says that sometimes is feels like stuff grinding |
i am taking care of her as of now because my sister is in Europe on a vacation. she tells my this stuff cause whe knows that i can find an answer somewhere... all the online diagnosises say that it is a meniscus injury or something, but doesn't that stuff require surgery? she's only 12 for peeps sake! the only thing that she has ever done to her knee, is fall off of her bike about 5 times when she was learning to ride, which was about 3rd grade, seriously. and this year she was oushing the tire swing at her school and it collapsed... YIKES! the other people weren't injured, but her knee hurt 4 about 2 days. she says that her parents and her were in walmart the other day, and it felt like stuff was grinding and that it almost locked up. it felt better when she got in the car and sat down. it has only locked up once, when her grandparents were at their house, she was sitting on the floor, she was getting up, and her knee wouldn't move! she tired to move it again, and it popped, and then it felt better. she said that today, when my husband and i were in menards, that her knee hurt only when she straightened it. idk what to do about this, i know that she wants answers, but i don't want to tell her that she might have to have surgery, it has been bugging her for about 6 months, the locking being about 3 months ago, the bike-fall-offs about 4-5 years ago, and the other stuff within the last month. anyone know what this might be, or some good online diagnosis things? i have tried yourdiagnosis and webmd. she asks for the answers, cause i have been at the computer researching this for 2 hours now... but i don't want to freak her out and with the answer being totally wrong.. so i really need advice. She really needs an xray. A meniscus tear would be extrememly painful to walk on. Without an xray it is hard to tell what is going on with your niece. She needs to be seen by an orthopedic knee specialist. Her knee cap may be pulling to tight to the side for some reason. Also could be a meniscus tear. judging by the description, it sounds like it has siezed. a joint will sieze when a small piece of cartilidge moves into the joint. most likely the cartilidge is what she feels grinding. im no doctor, but if she wants her knee to ever be normal [assuming it siezed], she will need surgery to remove the cartilidge. |
