How do i adjust hydraulic disc brakes? |
i have a set of shimano LX hydros and they seem to be losing a lot of throw. i centered the pads when i installed them and they worked fine for a week or so. after that they seem to get loose and continues to do so slightly. they are really bad now especially that back. i have the screw tightened down pretty far on the lever (LX dual control m585). im afraid to screw it in any more cuz i dont want to push it through all the way. even with the screw in this far, the lever is not tight and i have to pull it more than half ways to get some breaking power. the front isnt really a problem right now. might i need new pads? i think they are wearing out, but they still lock up easily, i just have to pull the lever really far. would they loosen from frequent heavy use? i use this bike for doing a lot of trials type riding (its the only bike i have). there are no leaks as far as i can see. This is a common problem with the levers on the hydro's... In the hilt of the lever(follow it down to the pivot) there is a lil' set screw in their - 2mm If I remember right. Use this screw to adjust the lever feel to your liking. http://www.gravitybolivia.com/images/hay... I hope this helps you out! Source(s): Bike Shop Manager - Top100 & Tennessee's Largest Trek Dealer get your drums looked at if they have new pads Most hydraulic disc brakes are self adjusting so I would say you need new pads. most often, when the pads are changed, they self adjust. there are no self adjusting that I know of. replace pad, install calipers, put the bolts in and tighten down, after two or three pumps of pedal, every thing, shuld be ready to go. Once in a while on cars with rear disks, there is some sort of brake lever that has to be reset. Your trusted mechanic, ought to know about that It could be that you have a weak hydraulic line that is bulging as you operate the lever, or it could be you have contaminated fluid, or you may just need new pads. Either way you should have the system checked by a mechanic. |
