Found moped in woods - can we keep it?? |
My son found an old moped (Honda Sky) in the woods. It has no licence plates and the ignition lock is damaged. The police don't really want to know about it so what can we do with it. He wants to keep it and do it up but we don't know how to get new licence plates etc. I think it may be a stolen bike but he says it has been in the woods for over a year as far as he knows. He and some mates wheeled it into my garden this weekend!!! Advice needed please! let the police know about it. if they dont want to deal with it, get something in writing(police report). if you cant prove you went to them with it, you or your son may be charged if it is found by rightful owners. I would get something from the police department on departmental letter head stating they do not want to address this. I think their position on the matter will change and the proper procedures will take place. This item should eventually get into a police auction if the rightful owner doesn't claim it and proper paper work will become available........ Good Luck Are we talking USA or UK laws here. I'm in the UK, if the law says they don't have an interest in it, then you can keep it, you will have trouble registering it as a frame & or engine number will be required to prove it is what you say it is, if they have been removed (ground out) it will almost certainly mean it was stolen at some point in the past, if it still has the numbers then when you try to register it it may also come up as previously stolen, It may not too, so you can take your chance. I'd check these things out before you spend any time & money on it. Alternatively let your son do it up but just use it offroad as a "field bike". Similar experience in the past Buy a similar bike from the salvage yard, transfer the numbers and voila!! If its fixable then fix it and ride the crap out of it till it dies ,You had fun for free so what the Heck, You need to do the right thing and find its original owner and give it back all clean polished and running properly, Go steal another one just like it ,throw it in the woods for a week then swap parts for the other one . Call the police department ,this may have been used in a robbery and you would be Helping to solve a crime Decesions ,Decesions / The rights and wrongs we must decide on !/ Peace |
