For all you 70's kids out there, Can you add anything? |
Did our parents love us? They let us play in a house where there wasn鈥檛 child safety locks on every cabinet door. They let us play in a house where there wasn鈥檛 plastic table edge protectors to protect the sharp corners. They let us ride our bikes (prepare yourself for this one!) without a helmet!! They let us play in the road with our friends; trusting one of us would yell 鈥淐AR!鈥?whenever there was a car coming. They left things like bleach and other household chemicals within our reach, trusting us to have the sense not to get into them. They didn鈥檛 put plastic socket protectors in all the unused outlets, thinking we had the sense to stay away from them. They didn鈥檛 bolt the 200 pound television set to the table, and in fact probably had the 200 pound television teetering precariously on a TV stand. Yet despite all of these things, we grew up happy and safe, and well adjusted adults. We may have got some scrapes and bruises along the way, but we lived to tell about it! No seatbelts. Even worse, no carseats! And we didn't just play in the street and ride our bikes with no helmets - we set up ramps in the street to jump with our bikes and our parents helped us build them! I walked to and from school all by myself since kindergarten and I was never kidnapped. Climbed trees. They let us sit on their lap and steer the car They didn't make us wear seat belts they also allowed us to go outside at 8 am and return home at dinner time unsupervised , knowing we'd be safe with our older sibling. I am 44...a 70's kid and I'M still alive...I think we just had more sense then....we were loved Yep and we are still here! So why is that that now all these same kids like us are so over protective and anal regarding our own kids. I have people gasp at me since I let my daughter ride her bike with no helmet. "how can you do that she could get brain damage" and that is what I respond with "so that is what happened to you huh?" LOL This entire issue drives me crazy. And they let us eat dirt and worms without running to the ER, they let us run around barefoot in the backyard, they did not pull us out of the preschool because we got hit or hurt there... wow... and the list would go on... I'm am glad there is somebody else on the same page as i am!!! We ran round naked in the sun, with no fear of perverts or people sighing in disgust. we climbed tree's without a safety net, grazed our knee's and got straight back up to play instead of being told to sit and be careful. x |
