Keeping my bicycle safe - What's the best lock/chain etc I can use?

Hi Guys...
I had my bike stolen about 8 weeks ago, just 2 weeks after I bought it & have had to buy another bike now.....Obviously the first lock I had on the bike that got nicked was useless.

I now have the Halfords 1m Cable & Padlock but need to get another lock to make security even better. It's not like I've got an expensive bike or anything but don't really wanna keep having it pinched.....what would you recommend I get?

Also - are D locks better than U locks or visa versa....what's the difference anyway.....Should I not even bother with a D or U lock?
Is a big fukc off chain what I need?
Sorry for a thousand questions in one here but I really don't have a clue.
I won't lock my bike up for fear of losing it again now so if I take my bike out - which I do every day, it means I can never even pop into a shop to buy a quick drink.......It's getting pretty frustrating.

Thanks for your help guys - much appreciated. KB x

My bike is locked up under the stairs at home, which whilst in a secure compound (securish anyway) its still out in the open, so I secure it.

I use a hravy duty chain and lock around the back wheel, frame, and the stair post, and a thinner coil lock securing the front wheel to the frame.

The main problem with bike thiefs is if they can't get the bike, they tend to either nick a wheel, or just kick the wheels in, which is a bit annoying. Securing all loose bits (probably including the saddle) is the safest way to leave the bike.

To answer your other question, D locks and U locks are the same thing - depending which way you hold them they either resemble a D or a U. And the problem with the big chain I've got is it weighs a bundle - I had to carry it over my shoulders to get it home (it was delivered to work), and it hurt!

Also consider the length of the chain - you want it long enough to secure the bike, but excess length is bad - it gives the gits room to use their cutters.

Have a look at the various locks that carry a guarantee - they will often replace your bike (that you've registered with them) if it is stolen while secured with that lock.

And finally - avoid Halfords stuff. I say this too much, but Halford's stuff isn't good. Their own branded equipment is invariably of a low quality, and there is a reason its cheaper than the competition.
Take the wheels off when you park it up...............its the only way!!
Just use any lock and your fist incase you see someone touching it.

try nashbar.com. They have a killer link lock made by onguard. It's hard to beat.
I recommend using two locks. Have a rigid U lock the frame in place and a cable lock to wrap the wheels in place. I didn't know there was a difference between a D lock and U lock but as long as it's the rigid one that is difficult to cut. Do not simply use one cable or chain lock as it is easily cuttable.
