Had my bicycle stolen, what do I do?

I don't believe the bike is registered. As for the make and model, I might have them, but idk.

If i see a person with my bike, do i confront them? If so, how?
What do I do if I see the bike unattended but locked...?

1. Report it to the police and get a crime reference number.
2. See if you can find the receipt from when you bought the bike (if you bought it new). Most bike shops record the frame number on the receipt.
3. Check to see if there is any insurance policy you can claim under - eg. it may be covered under your household insurance or your parents household insurance. Just depends.
4. Ask the police if they are aware of any notorious local markets for stolen bikes and then go and have a look round the stalls. It would help if you have a photograph of your bike.
5. It is really really unlikely that you would see a person with your bike. Also unless you have really unusual identifying features on your bike, do bear in mind that alot of bikes of the same make exist. You could be challenging a totally innocent person. If it does happen, you will need something to prove it is your bike (serial number or a photograph). Speak to the person who has your bike. If possible do this with a friend as a witness. Calmly explain that your bike was stolen and you think that that bike may be yours and see what they say. It is possible that they bought it unknowingly from the thief. Most bikes are stolen for re-sale. If they are willing, exchange names and addresses.
7. You will inevitably need to buy a new bike. This time (1) write down the serial number somewhere safe; (2) take a photograph of your bike as it is finally (eg. if you have painted it or added stikers) so you have a record (3) insure it properly so if it gets stolen again you can trade up and (4) consider getting a Marin who have an electronic ID tag system for all new bikes as well as their own insurance scheme.
first you should talk to the police there tell you if they can help you or not....
cry!!! thats what I did about mine lol !!!!

and get a new 1 :) really.........
if i see a person with my bike, i'd run after them without screaming like "heyyyy, u got my bike!!" i'd follow them quietly and then punch the person in the face and take the bike back, and when he sits up, say "that's wat u get man, steal from me again and i'll smoke u like a punch bag

gd luck
You should first report it to the police. If you do not know the make or model of the bike, you will have no luck in finding it.

Also, check your local pawn shops and look on Ebay and Craigslist. Those places are your larger "fencing" operations.
If it's not registered, then telling the police may not doing any good. They'll acknowledge that you've lost it, but can't really do much about it unfortunately.

If you see someone riding your bike, and your bike isn't a very popular one (unique in one aspect), I guess you can confront them while they're stopped and prevent them from leaving the scene if they try to leave after you've asked them interrogating-style questions.

If you see your bike locked up somewhere and you are sure that it's yours, then the only thing you can do is to stay there until the stealer fetches it. If it's out in the middle of nowhere, you have no right to "steal" it back, since you may be wrong, so I guess contact the cops about it then.

Since you probably will get a new one, the most important thing is to register it, and get yourself a VERY GOOD lock. Don't skimp out and buy a cheap chain lock. Get a U-lock made by Kryptonite. They have an orange one which is second-best, selling for about $60. Their best one, and probably the best on the market, is a yellow one for about $110. You may think it's not worth it, but if you keep getting your bikes stolen, then the value will add up.
you can also claim it on your home owners insurance and get a new one.
