My next door neighbor's landlord just gave me a bike abandoned by his tenant. This is good....but, I know nothing about bike locks and so I am wondering where I should go in Greenwich, UK to get a relatively inexpensive but effective bike lock. How much do I need to spend to get something that will stand up to local bike thieves? Also, do you know if I can pump up bike tires at a petrol station, or do I need to buy a pump? Thanks in advance...
$20.00 to $30.00 (10 to 15 Pounds) would be about a minimum in my opinion for a lock and cable. I use a cable through both wheels, the frame and locked to the seat. Plenty of stuff available for a lot less but most of it is junk.
Now, about that pump. I would strongly recommend you buy a pump. It is tempting but the pressure available at a station is high and it delivers a volume of air very quickly. I have inflated tires at a station but you must be VERY careful not to over inflate and blow the tire up. It is very easy to do. A good bicycle pump will cost as much as a good lock but all you have to do is destroy a tire or two at the petrol station and you will have that money tied up in new tires and tubes. My pump is designed for bicycles, it has a built in gage and a quick disconnect to prevent loosing air pressure when you release it from the tire.
Good luck and enjoy the bicycle... |
