Piece of key stuck in Masterlock U-Lock?

I recieved a Masterlock keyed U-lock before I went to college last fall. After about 3 months, the lock became hard to open. One day, in a rush, I tried a little too hard (I guess) to turn the key, and a piece snapped off inside the locking mechanism. I had a spare bike and lock, but I was hoping to get that bike back without paying $75+ for a locksmith. Any suggestions on how to get a piece of a key out of a lock? I have an extra key, so salvaging the key is not an issue, I would like the lock, though.

You can rent a lock cutter from for less then $75.

If it has a circular key, get rid of the lock, an article was written about how easy they are to open with the body part of a regular pen.
please tell me what type of lock it is ie model #. Ican help!
I don't know. Lock breaking machines aren't too expensive I don't think. I don't know how to keep the lock, but if you want the bike, cut/snap the lock.
