Bicycle locks; what is the main thing to look for.....? |
thickness of cable or strength of lock? What are the best ones out there? My new bike was 拢250 so not mega-expensive but I don't want it nicked by any opportunist scumbags that float about London. Seriously, this guy has got it all down, read what he posted on his website: http://sheldonbrown.com/lock-strategy.ht... And don't cheap out on the lock - you are doing the right thing by seeking advice first! Good luck and huge congratulations on your new bike! Ride lots! P.S. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5tntq3nhu... no lock is perfect. A lot of locks these days come with a guarentee, if your bike gets stolen, and they happen to break the lock and leave it there, they will pay for your bike! I usually use one by Kryptonite (they are short and hard to use sometimes but they are the best). I usually use 2 locks though, one long cable to lock my bike to something like a street sign, and the kryptonite lock to lock the wheel to the frame (so someone can't ride away w/ my bike). Own 4 bikes (one of which is worth over $1000), live in Detroit, and have never gotten one stolen. A good quality D lock is best, ask at local bike shop which make is best but I've never had any problems with mine and it's bronze standard, forget the make though. You need to keep them well oiled though, there have been times I couldn't get it unlocked with the key! A good quality D lock will cost around 拢40-50 but you need it for London also check out the insurance section on the LCC.ORG.UK web site it is very good as it covers the cost of damage to the lock if they try and fail and if they damage the bike while trying its repaired/replaced. |
