What is the best way to use a u-lock on my bicycle?

What is the best way to use a u-lock on my bicycle?

If your wheels are quick release, put them together and put your lock through the frame and both wheels, attatch to railing or whatever
Place the lock through your chain sprocket & back wheel.
if you can remove front wheel and place beside back wheel, pass the lock through the whole and around something sturdy, lock the device..
Assuming you have a quick release front wheel, the ideal way to use it is to take the front wheel off, place it next to your rear wheel, and run the shackle through the rear wheel, one or both of the rear seat stays (the part of the frame that goes from near the top of the seat tube to the rear axle), the front wheel, and whatever you are locking your bike to. Be careful when you purchase a U-lock though, as there are a few Kryptonite (and other brand) U-locks which are susceptible to the "bic pen breakin" as exampled in this link.

Hope this helps!!
Bike mechanic and former semi-pro racer, I know a few things!
Do not use a "U-Lock" type lock. They are one of the easiest locks to pick. All you need is a pen tube. It's so simple to do. Stories have been on my local news about how thieves do it.
