Why do people blindly believe in Megan's Law? |
As for Megan's Law, this law should have never been passed. After all the hysteria died done, this law has done nothing but harassed people who have served their time and are trying to rebuild their lives. Megan Kanka's death was a tragedy, but it was made worse because her mother allowed her to just leave her home and bike around without telling her where she was going. True, I believe that Jesse got what he deserved, but to go after all offenders because of his actions is not fair. It's actually a small percentage that recommits. Most move on to normal or semi-normal lives to the best of their abilities. Just like drugs in the 1980s, sex offenders are the hot topic. No one stops and thinks that maybe we went too far. Where will these people live and work? Will we continue to pay more and more taxes to keep them locked up in civil committment? This isn't a problem that will just go away by moving them somewhere else. This isn't someone else's problem, it's ours. People believe what they hear from the media... 95% of sex offences are committed by family or close friends of the victim and less than 5% of sex offenders re-offend. The media likes to rely on poster children to get viewers and the politicians rely on pointless laws to get votes. It's really sick what our government has become. i totally agree I have some friend that are on the megan's law list just for having sex with their girlfriend when they were teenager and stil have to live it up.. and here someone come along totally misunderstood the what the megan law is for and shoot someone just for being on the list pm A really great question!! Granted, that does not make what Jesse did ok to do, but had the child been supervised like she SHOULD have been it would not have happened. Sex Offenders are able to be rehabilitated. As a matter of fact, they have the lowest recidivism rate of all criminals, with the exception of murders! A child has a higher chance of being maimed, murdered, or harmed by a drug dealer/user, drunk driver, parental neglect, playground or school accident than being harmed by a sex offender! This is outrageous! Sex offenders sicken me. Kids are innocents and shouldn't even have to be warned to watch out for those "nice people" who come along and harm you. True a lot of people are harmed by family members, but that is hot an excuse for harming a child. All offenders are guilty of a crime regardless of Megan's law and should be punished severely, I believe. My childhood days were spent roaming around the countryside from early morning to late evening. Everyone knew who you belonged to and everyone where I lived watched out for you and your parents knew where you had been and what was going on. Now nobody seems to care about the innocent kids who are harmed. Harming a child is a CRIME. |
