Does anyone here have KNEE ARTHRITS? Please describe to me how it started, the symptoms and how you cope!?

Hi, I'm 34 years old and have been extremely active over the last 15 years- running, biking, wrestling and a tour of The Marine Corps... Anyway, I started having knee pain over the last 2 months and finally went to see a really great orthopedic surgeon who did a complete exam, coupled with an MRI. When the MRI came back he told me that the only thing he could see was a small touch of arthritis on the underside of my kneecap.

There is NO history of arthritis is my family and it's hard for me to believe that I'm already getting arthritis...

I originally thought that I had a tear in my knee cartilage (medial meniscus) but was told that there is no tear. Could pain from behind my kneecap be spreading to a different area of my knee giving my "phantom pain?" Someone told me that pain sometimes radiates to a different are of the knee... I have no locking "catching" whatsoever. I can do leg machines fine. No limp. No swelling. Sometimes it makes me uncomfortable to have knee bent. Advice?

Hi, At 40 years old, I had reconstructive knee surgery. I had a dual meniscus tear, a torn MCL a completely severed ACL and damage to the back of my knee cap (possibly pre-existing). Because of this and other things I have early arthritis in my knee also. My pain radiates through out my whole knee, sometimes it feels as though it travels to my upper leg and thigh. You said you have been pretty active. My doctor said that certain activities along with working on my feet on concrete could have been the cause of the damage to the back of my kneecap (The other was caused by falling on concrete). I don't think there has to be a history of arthritis in your family for you to develop it. My orthopedic surgeon prescribed Naproxen so I was able to stay awake and function as Vicodin (Hydrocodone) put me to sleep. Now I use Aleve when the pain flares. I also found that ice packs help alot if I am just sitting around or lying down. I hope this helps, I know what you're going through. Good Luck!
Hard as it is for you to believe, I don't find it unusual that a person of your age and activity level would have knee pain due to osteoarthritis, even without family history. Cartilage starts to wear down as we age, and it's degeneration can be accelerated by excess activity...which it sounds like you've engaged in! ;)

Although pain can sometimes "radiate", you did have a complete exam by a great orthopod including an MRI. I'm sure the diagnosis wasn't arrived at lightly.

Locking or "catching" isn't necessarily indicative of any specific condition, and not having those symptoms doesn't mean you don't have osteoarthritis. Your leg muscles are probably well-developed from all the years of working out, which means that degenerating cartilage will have great support in years to come. (I know I'm not making you feel better yet, but keep reading!)

Glucosamine/chondroitin supplementation can help, along with keeping up healthy levels of Omega-3 fatty acids. However, there is nothing you can do to reverse the damage. Of the three activities you've listed, running is the most problematic for your knees. You can still remain very active, but you will need to regulate intensity and how often.

Aleve will help with the pain for 12 hours per dose. You may find that you only need a pain reliever every so often, and you can go without more often than not.

Sport knee braces can help take some of the pressure off when you have to be on your feet for long stretches, or you're expecting to engage in prolonged activity.

Cortisone shots can relieve pain for longer periods of time. Usually months.

Be sure to see your doctor at least once a year.

You're not old, nor dead, but you might be at the stage of your life in which moderation will be your best course of action. It doesn't hurt to baby those knees every once in a while, either.

Best wishes, Geezer. (Just kidding!)
I hyperextended my left knee during a basketball game and my right knee grinds together with every step like gravel. Therma Care patches do actually provide 8hrs. of heat, and Darvocet(2), your Doctor may write you an anti-inflammatory prescription if your having swelling that is bothersome, the pain that radiates is real. It sounds like you may want to get a second opinion, but arthritis doesn't care how old or young you are.
Good Luck

I went to Dr had same as you, they gave me cortizone injections which helped for a while, but pain returned, they want to give me pain pills is the medical answer for me . So I went searching for an answer. Emu oil rubbed on the knee takes the pain away. Don't ask me how, all I know is it goes deeper than another topical oil and helps the joint.
