Airline check-in baggage regulations. Bags should be closed, but I wonder if something was sticking out...?

I want to take my wife's bicycle back home. I figure I can stuff it into a garment bag, but I don't want to take the forks and handlebar stem off, so the stem might end up sticking out. I figure I can lock the bag with a small lock connecting the zippers around the stem, so it will be closed, just with the handlebar stem protruding. Do you think the airlines will allow this?

I would suggest the you check directly with your airlines as each may have a different policy regarding transporting a bike. The TSA does not prohibit the item from being on the aircraft, so it is definitely an individual airline decision. Although, you can not lock the item up in the a garment bag, unless you use a TSA approved lock, as they need to be able to get into any bag that is being placed on the aircraft to inspect it, and if they can not open you lock they will break it open.
Hope this helps and have a great trip! Source(s): http://www.jets.com/private_jets.aspx...

No; bags have to be unlocked to be put on the plane. I recommend shipping the bike by common carrier instead.
No. Each carrier - airlines, buses and railroads - have specific rules regarding the transport of bicycles. All carriers specify that bicycles must be boxed and shipped as baggage.

Have you seen the way baggage is handled by the airlines, they throw all items on top of eack other, the bike will be bent, and destroyed, dismantle as much as possible, and place in heavy duty box! It's worth the trouble, if you want the bike to reach your destination intact. Also you are no longer allowed to lock any baggage, so they will ask you to unlock bag, it might be better to take bike to a specialty mail shop, where they will pack it for you, and mail it to your destination.
You're kidding right? Most airlines will allow you to check bike boxes, but there is an additional fee for that. Talk to you airline for the specific rules. As an airline employee I would not let that through for sure.
