What bike should I buy to commute to work in London (and where)?

Hi All,

Any suggestions? I want something light, fast and easy to maintain.

Thanks in advance!

^^ Err...Hub gears are anything but easy to maintain.

So, cycling around London - Nice and flat, you want to be quick and nimble and have a bike that's easy to maintain?
I'd suggest a single speed racer.

There's loads on eBay, but this guy puts up a few each week. He converts old bikes into nifty single speed racers and the bikes can be delivered too :)

Check out the Peugeot he's currently selling - What a beauty!

If I had to buy a bike to commute in London I would get the Pinnacle Stratus 1.0 (Equipped). Nice solid bike. They are available atEvans Cycles- there are 30 of those shops around London.

If you want something a little better, the Stratus 2.0 or Stratus 3.0 are also good choices.

Speed has to do with the "engine" (you!). Maintenance is pretty easy with any of these models.

I'd buy a three-speed. They are by far the easiest to maintain. Sturmey-Archer gears are very useful in an urban enviroment.

Maybe this sort of thing:

Edit: Tom P, how are hub gears difficult to maintain? A drop of oil in the lubrication hole every few weeks, and on the newer models not even that. You are very badly informed.

The TREK 7.9 FX has a mountain bike design though the wheels are slick recommended for asphalt/road conditions---pretty light too. Go to a Trek dealer near you and test drive it---it's wonderful!
