My motorcycle wont turn off? |
when i turn off the key my bike doesnt turn off and it still sparks with no key in it, the key is only of use for lights. REPLIES: You can turn your engine off by covering the end of your exhaust with a cloth (or something so you don't burn yourself). ahahahahahaha I feel sorry vfor you Maybe the switch is bad. how do you start it? Am really sorry I am not sure - but maybe the answer is:- This happens once in a while on my Vespa. What happens is when you turn the key to the off position, all it really does is turns on an extra ground and basically closes the circuit that runs the bike. What happened more then likely ( as it does on my bike ) the black wire (ground) fell out of the slot on the reverse side of the key cluster. remove any panels and get to the other side of the key. push the wire cap back onto the cluster and it should turn off. Bend it a little if you want to keep it from jumping out again. when you hit a kill switch or turn the key off it should short out the spark to ground so it doesn't go to the spark plug. If it's not turning off: To paraphrase: year, make and model are a big help. check the fuses , also check the ignition wires maybe you need a new swich because it is bad:) PLEASE tell us year, make, model. The correct answer depends on the type ignition you have. If it is a magneto type ignition, the switch grounds a wire, which kills the spark. Therefore, it would likely be the switch, or an open in the wire from magneto to switch. If it is a battery operated system, then the switch supplies power to the coil, and would likely be a bad switch. if the key normally turns on the ignition circuit, and you then press a starter button or kick start it, but when turning the key to off it doesn't stop, the key operated switch is broken internally. You need to replace his switch, which I assume is a barrel switch into which you put your key. Sounds like your ignition switch/barrel is knackerd. Have you tried phoning some of the bike breakers? You should be able to pick up a replacement for it for little cost. best bet is to wire in another kill switch[of a hidden switch]...just wire it inline with a coil wire...as well as letting your bike stop it will give extra anti theft device.. Pull your ignition barrell out and get a ohmmeter on it. Test for continuity at every key setting. You'll no doubt need a wiring diagram unless you know what goes where. If you have continuity through the switch to your coils when the key is set to 'off' your ignition switch is knackered. If the switch tests ok, work through your wiring systematically or post again and let us know where you're up to. Every modern bike I've seen has a starter switch and kill switch as part of the standard electrical system. I've never seen one start the way a car does on the turn of the key. Do you mind giving us an idea of what kind of bike you're talking about? It could be that a previous owner has made a complete hash of repairing the wiring after a theft or crash. If it is not clicking, I would suspect a faulty ignition switch, loose wiring, or a faulty starter relay. You can test the relay using a multimeter ($20 Home Depot).
