My motorcycle wont turn off?

when i turn off the key my bike doesnt turn off and it still sparks with no key in it, the key is only of use for lights.
i know it isnt very secure which i why i wont tell you were i live lol but how can i turn it off without having to turn fuel off, stall it etc
ive thought of a kill switch but wouldnt this mean it will still spark when theres no key?
But the ignition barrel seems to wired to the coil and flywheel fine and to the wiring diagram.

REPLIES:

answer 1: Pointless

answer 2: absolutely brilliant answer, thank you so much youve solved all my problems. (...NOT)

answer 3: How do you mean? It sparks i just cant make it stop sparking, i kick-start it, but cannot turn it off.

Sensible answers welcome.

You can turn your engine off by covering the end of your exhaust with a cloth (or something so you don't burn yourself).

ahahahahahaha I feel sorry vfor you

Maybe the switch is bad.

how do you start it?

Am really sorry I am not sure - but maybe the answer is:-

To put on some wellies and rubber gloves and remove the spark plug cap thus causing the engine to stop running. Take great care at all costs not to get a shock especially when returning cap to spark plug prior to next journey.

If it were me I would call a nice AA man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This happens once in a while on my Vespa. What happens is when you turn the key to the off position, all it really does is turns on an extra ground and basically closes the circuit that runs the bike. What happened more then likely ( as it does on my bike ) the black wire (ground) fell out of the slot on the reverse side of the key cluster. remove any panels and get to the other side of the key. push the wire cap back onto the cluster and it should turn off. Bend it a little if you want to keep it from jumping out again.

when you hit a kill switch or turn the key off it should short out the spark to ground so it doesn't go to the spark plug. If it's not turning off:
-the switch could be bad
-there could be a broken wire leading to the switch
-if the switch grounds out to the metal on the bottom side where it is connected, there could be rust or paint or something built up under it preventing it from making contact

I had a bike where the switch failed, I would put the choke on full and open the throttle wide and it would just die out (or sometimes just stall it). Obviously this isn't convenient, and probably not very good for the bike.

It's probably worth it to troubleshoot the key switch so it works correctly (assuming it's SUPPOSED to turn the bike off). If you can get a multimeter, you should be able to see continuity between the frame of the bike and the kill wire when the switch is pressed. Trace the kill wire back from the switch and make sure it's intact and is hooked up correctly on the other end. If you can get an electrical diagram of your bike or a factory service manual it would help with troubleshooting.

To paraphrase: year, make and model are a big help.
Most have a kill switch on the right bar. Turn it off. It stops the engine by grounding the coil (usually).
You may have a kickstand switch that you could get by with.
Personally, I think the contacts inside the ignition switch are messed up and shorted together.
The usual positions are:
Park (or accessory) where just the running lights are on. No headlight or ignition.
Off where everything is off.
Run (or ignition) where all lights and ignition are on.

check the fuses , also check the ignition wires

maybe you need a new swich because it is bad:)

PLEASE tell us year, make, model. The correct answer depends on the type ignition you have. If it is a magneto type ignition, the switch grounds a wire, which kills the spark. Therefore, it would likely be the switch, or an open in the wire from magneto to switch. If it is a battery operated system, then the switch supplies power to the coil, and would likely be a bad switch.

If this does not help, you may E-mail me with details on the bike, and I will give specific trouble shooting details.

if the key normally turns on the ignition circuit, and you then press a starter button or kick start it, but when turning the key to off it doesn't stop, the key operated switch is broken internally. You need to replace his switch, which I assume is a barrel switch into which you put your key.
these barrel locks are pretty reliable but can fall apart internally which it sounds from what you say, is the problem.

Sounds like your ignition switch/barrel is knackerd. Have you tried phoning some of the bike breakers? You should be able to pick up a replacement for it for little cost.

best bet is to wire in another kill switch[of a hidden switch]...just wire it inline with a coil wire...as well as letting your bike stop it will give extra anti theft device..

Pull your ignition barrell out and get a ohmmeter on it. Test for continuity at every key setting. You'll no doubt need a wiring diagram unless you know what goes where. If you have continuity through the switch to your coils when the key is set to 'off' your ignition switch is knackered. If the switch tests ok, work through your wiring systematically or post again and let us know where you're up to.

Every modern bike I've seen has a starter switch and kill switch as part of the standard electrical system. I've never seen one start the way a car does on the turn of the key. Do you mind giving us an idea of what kind of bike you're talking about? It could be that a previous owner has made a complete hash of repairing the wiring after a theft or crash. I'd say you should take it to a professional.
