I am having problems with my starting/ignition system.?

I can turn the key to the on position and the lights come on and the fuses are not bad. So I try to start the bike and it will turn over the first time. ( The bike runs fine after it actually starts.) So after I let off the starter switch, if the bike does not start the first time and I try to press the switch to start it again it will not do anything. No clicking noise... nothing! So I took the starter switch on/off switch housing apart to check the contacts and they were a little dirty so I cleaned them off. Put it back together and tried to start the bike. same thing again it turned over the first time and the second time nothing. Any suggestions?

If it is not clicking, I would suspect a faulty ignition switch, loose wiring, or a faulty starter relay. You can test the relay using a multimeter ($20 Home Depot). You can find instructions on the internet for that. Make sure your ground wires are all properly connected. I would test the wires going to the relay to make sure you have 12V. If you have 12V, then your relay is probably bad. Since it sometimes starts up, I would say you probably have a loose ground somewhere.

starter relay ( solenoid ) , or the starter has a bad area on the armature
