Harley/Custom builders/riders can you help? |
Changing my bars from standard to around 6" rise with 2" risers on my (Standard)Dyna LR. What type(s) of extended clutch, brake and throttle cables can I get? Also how do I extend the wiring loom for lights etc without it ending up looking like a rat bike? Is it posssible to route cables or wires thru the bars? all is possible man.... that eight inches higher like you going to be standing up to ride or what id go and order cables a couple inches longer than your rise if not more and as for the wires just cut and rewire and yes you can run tru the bars depend on the kind some are hole cut just for it It's definitely possible to route cables through the bars also the frame. Let's face it, these avenues provide a perfect conduit for wires so why not use them? I would suggest that you direct your questions to those who know best. Have you bought publications like 'Back Street Heroes'? It all depends on how mechanically inclined you are. and how much you can do yourself.the after market sells extended wiring harnesses, if you aren't up to making your own. Iknow Dennis Kirk has them.If your going to get custom bars, buy them already drilled for internal wiring. before you run the wires .be sure to deburr any sharp edges from the holes!measure your existing bars and risers, then measure the new ones and subtract the difference to find outwhat size cables you'll need.a trick I use to get the wires in is a string with a small weight(nut) dropped in the hole and out the other hole Before I mount the bars. then I use a guitar string to pull the wires through.watch how you rout the wires at the triple tree too, that's a common pinch point.Radio Shack sells a cheap pin pusher tool for removing the wires from their connectors. Good luck with your project what i did to find the length for my cables was to run a piece of flexible wire along the route that the cable took with the new handlebars on. then i measured the length of that wire and that's the length cable you need. you can do that with clutch, throttle tach, speedo, and even brake [if you have the old drum setup]. I've got 12" apes on my dyna superglide. The wiring loom for all the switches and lights are run through the bars. Most modern bars are pre-drilled for this. One thing I will tell you, if you're going to run your wiring through your bars, AVOID "Z" bars or anything with 90degree angles. It's damn near impossible to get all the wires on a stock bike through those bends. Had a ***** of a time trying to wire a buddy's bike after running those things. Yes, to all your questions. Barnett makes nice braided stainless steel cables, HD has standard ones in extended lengths. You also need a longer brake line. You can get extended wiring harnesses too, so everything stays color coded correctely. I don't know what year your bike is, but newer Harley's have internal wiring in the bars. The biggest hassle is cutting and fitting the wires at different spots so you don't end up with a big knot of wires in one spot that won't fit into the bars. |
