Did Obama's description of his grandmother as a typical white woman offend you?

I was a bike messenger in Manhattan, NY once. I was slowing down by a car stopped by the red light, with a lone white woman driving, planning to go around her car and cross the avenue. She stared at me with scared suspicious eyes and quickly pulled up her windows.
Was it because she's a racist, or because she didn't know me, was alone in the car, got scared and did something that didn't come out right?
I was surprised and somewhat offended by her reaction. What the hell did she assume I was? A sociopath thug? I looked down at her for a second, and quickly dismissed her as some batty woman who doesn't know the meaning of good looking. Were I more sanguine, and a byproduct of the black American experience in this country, I could have done something I'd regret later.
I think Obama's statements about his granny aimed to excuse or explain her behavior, and that of whites in general who act as recounted above, rather than throw her under the bus as a racist.
What say you?

As much as the statement "typical black person" would offend them.
