Can I put a blinking light on me facing backwards or for that matter on my bike, similar to bycyclists?

I have one of those real bright rectangular red, multi flashing sequence lights that I have for my peddle bike. My Harley has a very tiny stop/taillight. Just wondering if its legal to make myself more visible from behind. I dont want to spend big $$ for a extended taillight assembly. Or does anyone have any other brilliant ideas?

Actually is there a really bright running light/brake light that I can screw into my taillight that is LED? My bike just has a simple dual filament car bulb in it. Thanks to all answerers

Was a time I could legally use flashing red lights.
I am no longer with any Fire Dept. so it's not legal for me anymore.

OK, I have my reasons for disliking flashing lights, but I do have something to offer you. Or rather, HD does.
For about $50.00 there are two rear signal conversion kits. Both just plug into the wiring harness. Both change your rear turn signals to red lenses. Both turn your rear signals into extra brake lights. One also makes them running lights.

there's some pretty badass taillight accessories I've seen on cruisers.

Animated LED displays, moving things, they have all sorts of ****, personally I don't think the flasher is a good idea, and I'm almost sure it's illegal, it'd just piss me off, not to mention it wouldn't react to a brake and probably just take attention away from what little tail light you have and I really like some of the LED stuff they have. Even if you just got a really bright LED bulb for what you already have.

I'm sure you can find something to suit your fancy, safety 1st!

If it were legal for you to wear a flashing light to make yourself more visible at night while riding a motorcycle, it would have already been done. In other words, this idea would have been developed into a product for motorcyclists by now. The key to the reason why it is not legal is the word "flashing". Supplemental flashing lights on a motor vehicle are generally not legal except on public safety, or special transportation vehicles.

You have a tiny tail light, is it stock, and is it legal? Factory installed lights meet federal, and local, standards for size and brightness. If you do not have a tail light that meets those standards, your bike is illegal.

Other ideas, besides upgrading your tail light, wear reflective clothing. We've all seen those vests the traffic workers wear made of high viz fabric with the reflective stripes. There is motorcycle clothing, jackets, pants and boots that incorporate reflective fabric. Three of my riding jackets have reflective fabric incorporated in their designs.

I wear a bright green Icon Mil Spec Vest High Visibility Vest. If you are a big guy make sure you order the XL size.

Don't do an LED bulb, they just aren't as bright as a normal filament bulb (direct light, no reflection inside), they are getting a whole lot better though.

You could add 2 small lights (one on each side) or illuminate your blinkers (like on the front) and place red lenses on them. All depends on model bike and what you want.

There is a brand of helmet (motocross) that had flashing leds in the back of it, I almost bought it for when I ride my supermoto. Do a search for something like that on a street/open-face helmet (whatever you wear if you wear). I don't see a problem with the strobe being attached to your bike or on your back ect. Wear it, IF you do get busted, I couldn't imagine you getting into trouble for trying to be safer. Also contact your local DMV about rule/reg on having a continuous flashing light on your cycle. Or you may just need to upgrade to a larger light.

As for LEDS. I'm runnin this style on the front marker/turn signals on my '97 GMC:

They aren't quite as bright as stock, but are more than enough to be legal. They have some leds that face backwards (toward the socket) so that the light can reflect off of the reflector inside the light housing. There is also a 30-led style, so it will give you more light out the back, but wont fill the lens with light (I bet you would just get a bright circle on your lens) because it doesn't have any backward facing leds.

Bright reflective clothing is best, like the Ikon MilSpec mentioned above. However, there is something called a brake-light/tail-light modulator. This is a very bright light which flashes/oscillates when you touch your brakes. It flashes for about 15 seconds, then times itself off till you touch your brakes again. This helps to make you visible to those inattentive, cellphone using cagers.
