How long do you think a starter engine will last if used to power a childs electric car.?

I have the bright idea to use a very powerful harley starter engine to power a car that I will weld together. I'm thinking of using my bikes orig tire with spockets in the rear and two smaller wheels in the front. Then I'll bolt in a 5 point harness (baby seat) onto the frame. I'll give it some whiskey bars and paint it flat black. Also if anyone could give me pointers on how the thottlw would work, that would be nice too. It will run off of a 12 volt. I've seen this size starter push a road king, so I assume that under light use, the starter could go a long way before burning up. FYI, this will be safe. I'm going to give it a 3 piston brake soft tail brake.

A starter motor is incredibly powerful but not a great choice as the power requirements to make it run are atrocious, using a large lead acid would probabl only last about 2-3 minutes and lead acid is pretty much your only choice when running this much current. Your better bet is a DC motor that is higher voltage such as those used for electric bike kits,a dryer motor would be useless because its a DC motor. You may find a good powerful DC motor on ebay for less then a hundred bucks. Source(s): Been there done that
I think you should look for a better propeling system... that starter is going to burn out quick even if used for only several minutes at a time. A teacher told me about using a washing machine since it has different speeds but i dont know exactly how it would be put together.
I don't think a starter motor is a good choice. They aren't designed for continuous use.
amazes me .....use a harley starter motor cos there cheap & you have five of them in the shed not doing anything.....

wait a minute... I could go to the local car wrecking yard & get the starter motors out of them.... but they only have to turn over V8 cars ... might not be as powerfull as the harley ones...

this car your welding together??? how are you thinking of welding it?? what material are you going to use??

aluminum is light ,strong but isnt cheap....& you need a Tig welder..

light gauge steel..... you got a Mig welder??

water pipe.. weighs a lot but its cheap & the harley motors strong..... I can stick weld that together....

have you really thought this through.... cos more info would be good.. like what your making it from & can you weld???

years ago I used a car starter motor on a big skate board.. worked OK.. & was fast .. scary to ride with no brakes..LOL

once up to speed it just coasted along untill you needed to give it another quick burst to speed up again.. so the motor didnt have to run continuosly...

So yes it will work.... but its not just a case of bolt it on & it works.... surf the net & look at some electronics sites for motor controlers... they will have to take a fair bit of amperage....
been there.............. done that
You can do a search for brushless motors and speed controllers on-line. They make those powerfull enough to propel adults up to 40mph
