Do police enforce trafic laws for bicycle riders? |
I often see large groups of riders on backroads and most of the time they do not yield to cars and they run red lights instead of breaking up the group. Most do not obey traffic laws by passing cars at stoplights and rolling through intersections when they do not have the right of way. But I've neve seen police officers stop them. They seem to look the other way. Just mostly at night for the riders safety :) No, but my brother got a DUI on a riding lawnmower! LOL In my little town the police often do enforce the traffic laws against bicycle riders....I have friends who have gotten tickets that SOUND like driving without headlights on, really riding without a flashlight, and one friend who spent the night in the drunk tank for riding while intoxicated! (took his bike rather than drive). Some find it annoying, I like the fact the town is so safe the police have little else to do! A vehicle is a vehicle, and the laws apply equally whether it's a car, truck, bus, motor cycle or bicycle. Interestingly motorized wheel chairs are treated as pedestrians. I've seen them stopped, I've seen drunk driving tickets given for being on bicycle while impaired. So yes, they should obey all the laws that apply to any other vehicles, and yes, then can be ticketed for failure to comply to those laws. The police do not enforce the laws for bike riders as strictly as other vehicles, but there are reasons for this. One, the police issuing a ticket will most likely have to show up in court or file a deposition, which is time consuming and the peer pressure from other officers is cruel, and the public wants the police enforcing laws against the real bad guys, not two wheelers. The police have to be able to stop the bicyclist, and sometimes this is harder than you would think. I put my support and faith in the law enforcement agencies to do what is right for the masses. I do applaud you for noticing bikes on the road and encourage others to watch for bicyclists. They are, by the way, helping the environment and reducing traffic congestion overall for the rest of us. Impeding traffic. Failure to yeild. No signal. Improper turn. Improper lane change. Failure to obey a traffic control device. If you can't keep up with traffic and use turn signals, brake lights and the like, get your @$$ on the grass. |
