Traffic in Taiwan...and the people?

I almost had an accident with a motorbike today when I crossed the road. There was no traffic light there, and I first stopped to let the other bike go first, but then it stopped as well, so I started my bicycle, but then the other bike accelerated almost at the same time, and then the bike braked suddenly to avoid collision. There were two people riding the motorbike, and they almost fell down, although they didn't.

I stopped to see whether they were alright, and then they yelled at me saying: 浣犲埌搴曡閬庝笉閬庯紵浣犲构鍢涳紵

Man, that was so rude! They think it's my fault?

They shouldn't be accelerating in the first place! They should slow down just in case. Two people shouldn't be riding one bike, it's dangerous!

I think the traffic here is horrible, and the people are rude. Do you think this is a normal reaction?

Next time, just smile at them, wave, and say, "Oh...xie xie. Xie xie!"

They will mumble something under their breath about being a stupid foreigner and move on. Driving is much different here. The Western mentality is to drive with safety in mind. Here, the idea is to drive with your own wants in mind. "I want to be at that intersection now. How dare YOU get in MY way?"

Are Taiwanese rude? As a general rule, I don't think so. They do think of things MUCH differently than we do. We can easily find this as being rude if we don't understand it.

Traffic is bad,but dont let it get you down. And a couple of people dont make the Taiwanese rude. It could also be the extreme heat we have been having lately, many people are quite touchy.
Traffic is bad I have to agree. Heat makes people nutty and irritable. Everyone loses it once in a while. Don't judge everyone by 1 bad experience. In general, outside of driving time, people are quite lovely in Taiwan. But for some reason you put a seemingly normal person onto a motorized vehicle, people want to go maximum speed with minimal thought, especially when they want to get out of the sun.
Hi Packa,
As you know, there are many motorbike riders in Taiwan, why many people riding bikes in this country? Because riding bike in Taiwan is convenient for people in town.

Some riders are not good because no rules in their mind even they passed exams and got drive license.
Too many riders in Taipei let people feel uncomfortable.
Some people riding bike very fast ,some don't.
I think following the traffic sign & rules is always right. If an accident happened, call police officer #110.
If you meet someone who are rude, don't need to talk with them. Rude people are bad.

Every country has its life style, when you stay longer you will know more.

Almost all roads in Taipei are narrow,so you have better riding bicycle carefully.
