What is the weight needed on the pressure plates at stoplights to cause it to change? |
In order for stoplights to change, a car, truck or something heavy needs to be on the plate. What is the weight needed. I know bicycles and some motorcycles will not trigger the light to change. Its actually a metal detector. If you put a motorcycle wheel next to the "cut out" part, it will trigger most of the time. It helps if your rims are metal, if you got carbon fiber rims you need to wait for a car to show up or wait till its clear and run the light. If you get caught, you will get busted In many cases it's not a pressure plate but a coil that produces a magnetic field that senses the steel in the vehicle. A motorcycle or a bicycle may not have enough mass of steel to trigger it. Figure most cars weigh over 2,000 lbs or 1,000 kilos, threshold is probably 50%-75% of that. I believe what causes the light to change is a motion censor that is built into the lights. This censor is programmed to send signals for the light to change if it 'senses' that a vehicle is within 15-20 ft. of the light. I know this to be true b/c around my area, there's this light that used to take forever to turn green, until I realized that if I stop at a certain point, it automatically changes. |
