Why doesn't my motorbike (2000 GSXR 600 SRAD) start? |
I commute to work 10 miles each way 5 days a week. 2 weeks without a problem, bike starting first time and running smooth (has just had a major service). On Tuesday I stalled the bike at traffic lights twice (entirely rider error) but the second time it didn't start. It didn't even turn over and sounded like the battery didn't have enough power, and by the third attempt absolutely nothing. Why? And how do I prevent it? - This has happened several times over 9 months - The battery goes flat after about 10 days standing (no alarm but immobiliser set) - After charging on a home charger the battery tests fine - Battery is original to the bike - First time I've ever had a problem while using the bike regularly The battery is 8ah but the home charger I use is 12ah, I was told that isn't a problem but could it be? As others have said, first suspect is the battery. Modern sealed batteries can perform perfectly one day and die the next, and a dying battery can appear healthy when a trickle charger is being used, then conk out a few hours after it's disconnected. Don't ever use high current car chargers with modern bike batteries. They kill them. If your bike is stood for weeks protected by an alarm you'll need to use a trickle charger to keep the battery topped up. Any bike shop will sell you one for about 拢50. The interesting thing with your problem is the sporadic nature of the starting fault. If it's not the battery, next suspect is the starter clutch. It's also possible you've got a dead patch in the windings of your starter motor, but less likely I think. I'm afraid the only solution is to get a dealer to check it out. Ask for a "drop test" to check if the battery is healthy. If it is, the dealer can easily check the condition of the starter clutch and motor, though these will be somewhat more costly to fix. Fingers crossed it's the battery! All the best. Source(s): I have had identical symptoms on a Triumph and an Aprilia. The Triumph just needed a battery, the Aprilia needed a starter clutch. u need to lay of the drink stop trying to start it with ur house keys and find the real keys If the battery isnt holding a charge and is 7 years old you should be looking at changing it. I had the same problem with my FZR. 拢25 later and a new battery, i havent had that problem since It is time for a new battery. You have got your moneys worth out of the first one. Now you can go to walmart and get a cheap one that will last a few years or go to a bike shop and drop the bucks and get a quality one that will last awhile. try changing the spark plug and the battery |
