Anyone cycled around Australia?

I do like a nice easy challenge . Anybody got any tales/difficulties they can tell me about it . Is it absolutely essential to use a touring bike or could a good light hardtail MTB with suspension forks and adapted pannier racks do the job? ( It's only about 10000 kms , more aeroboic capacity than brains me)

Oh my God you are a brave one it;s about 14,000 kms. I have trouble contemplating cycling to the shops and that is only 3 blocks away. Think of what you would have to take with you to cover all weather situations to say nothing of the terrain and insects etc.
no but australia is huge it would take you forever
You are keen Digger.Crikey mate, it's a bloody long way. It wasn't that long ago that even vehicles had to carry extra fuel to get them between service stations.People who have never been here just don't realise how desolate and lonely it can be once you get outside populated areas. Mate, you'll be flat out like a lizard drinking, getting a pushbike around Australia. We have a few sayings and one being, "It'll be harder than nails and you'll feel like you are trying to push shite uphill" Sorry, only trying to be fair dinkum with ya buddy. Good Luck.
I've never done it but there are a few who have. One Kiwi bloke I knew set out to ride from Brisbane to Cairns but the semi-trailers (18 wheelers) scared him witless so he put himself and his bike on the train after about 200km.

You will need to carry plenty of water, which is heavy There are long distances between any kind of town or house in some regions, 100 -200 -300 km. A touring bike, fairly heavily built might be best. I've heard of light bikes falling apart on long rides. However the roads are not particularly rough.

There are several sites or pages devoted to "cycle around Australia" get on to one or more and you might find a group who plan to do it.

I know this is a bit off-topic but you might glean some information form "postie bike challenge" sites. These relate to a 4000km challenge ride for very light motorcycles.
