The oil warning light on my Yamaha Maxim 750 is constantly on, but the oil is at the proper fill level. Help? |
I bought this bike recently, and an idiot dropped it when I turned my back. Since then, the oil light has been on. I stood the bike up straight and added almost of quart of oil to reach the proper fill level, but yet the light stays on. Could this just be faulty electrical, because the bike is 25 years old? Or could running it be terrible for the engine? I haven't been riding it since the light has been on. The light indicates the oil pressure and not the oil level. Either the oil pressure sensor and/or wiring is damaged or the oil pump is not working properly. I would check the wiring and the sensor first, if all fine then check the pump. Could be the oil pressure sensor. I say bad sensor. Sounds like it could be a sensor was damaged when it was dropped. Best advice is get someone qualified to look at it. Check the wire at the oil pressure switch. It mat have come off and is grounding the circuit, keeping the light on. Change the oil pressure switch. It may have been damaged when the bike was dropped. IMHO it's an electrical thing. Guardrailjim called it, see his response. The oil light DOES NOT indicate oil level, but rather oil pressure. It the light is on all the time, at first I'd say a by-pass valve is stuck open, a oil pump drive key is sheared, oil pump is shot, etc. Then I read further where the bike fell over, and I'd tend to say it's the oil pressure sending unit. Remove unit from bike. Get either a multi-meter or a continuity tester, and hook up to the switch (+ to electrical terminal, - grounded to body of switch). Where the switch threads into the engine, it is hollow. Down inside is a spring loaded valve. Using a blunt probe, push on the valve, causing it to move, which SHOULD cause a change in the reading of the gauge. (the switch is NORMALLY CLOSED [N/C], and there SHOULD be a reading at rest, none when you depress valve). |
