You have asked the right question my friend!

The Brompton is considered the "classic" folding bike, and the company leads the way in the folding bike market. Brompton's are famous for folding brilliantly - smaller and quicker than virtually any alternative. However, this IS what you are buying it for - for its foldability. For riding characteristics, they are not the best. Also, because of their name and heritage, they are a hell of a lot more expensive compared to other brands, despite Brompton fold-ups NOT being the best!!

For something a little more light and fun, you should check out Dahon.com. These bikes are way cooler than the Brompton, with the latter always looking like a bit of a science teacher bike. With bikes weighing LESS than 9KG, you can build up real speed and the rigid Dahon frames provide really sure-footed, predictable handling. They also produce bikes with gears, adjustable handlebars and front wheel suspension for superior comfort and a really smooth ride. Dahon are famous for producing fold up bikes which are actually really fun to ride.

For somethin a little more sporty why not try the Airnimal Joey? (airnimalfoldinbikes.com) - While the folding system is not as compact or as quick as other brands, Airnimal bikes are light, rigid, and quick. They also have larger-diameter wheels (24"), giving possibly the closest to conventional bike performance and feel of any folder. You can also get a hard-suitcase for these bikes, giving extra portability options. With certain models coming with telescopic seat pins and 8-speed gripshift gears, its a good choice for the more demanding sporty cyclist.

I would also recommend checking out Evans Cycles to see their range of foldable bikes. They have a huge range of stock and the customer service is second to none. I should know - i've just bought a bike from them!

Hope this helps.
