Motorbike wont start. crank but no ignition.?

im really new to motorbikes, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
yesterday, my bike wouldnt start, it just clicked under the seat, and the engine wouldn't crank.but it would kick start and jump start fine-i still drove fine. the lights and horn worked.
today, i reconnected the battery with lots of WD40, and it worked fine- started like a dream, but 10miles later, the bike died, and refused to start. it wouldn't even kick start, and the engine cranks, but thats it. it didn't just stall, there was a loss of power- i noticed it slowing down- and then slowly came to a halt. but lights, horn, etc work, and the starter motor turns.
what could it be? ive heard it could be battery related, but from what i understand, starting the bike takes more power than anything else on the machine- and it seems to turn over okay.any feedback appreciated

1) remove battery and charge it. Check it with a hygrometer, an inexpensive tool available at auto parts stores. If it tests OK, reinstall it, if not, replace.
2) Pull the spark plug wire from top of plug, and install a new plug into the wire. Hold the plug so that the threaded part of it touches the cylinder head ( where the old plug came out of). Now have someone turn the engine over and watch for spark to jump across the gap of the plug. If it does, your ignition system is OK.
3) Install the new plug into the head. Try to start the engine. If it starts, good! If not, check the plug. Is it wet? If so, locate your carburator and remove the float bowl at the bottom of the carb. Remove the float inside the bowl and shake it. Does it have fluid inside it? If it does, replace it, if not, reinstall the one you have.
4) make sure all old fuel has been drained and replaced with new, fresh fuel.
5) Look closely at all wiring, watch for possible shorts and/or damaged insulation on wires. tape up any that look worn.

You also may wish to have your regulator/rectifier checked.

These 5 checks solve most starting problems. Contact me at yahoo.com if it doesn't. I 'm always up for a challenge. Source(s): Former Honda cycle parts department manager
Your alternator is not charging the battery.
The things I'd check, in order, is there Gas in the tank? Need to switch to reserve? Then check the bike's safety switches:

The stop/run switch (flip it back and forth, make sure it's on 'run' and didn't get bumped accidentally)
The Clutch switch (2 wires on the bottom side of the lever running into a switch, should both be plugged in)
The Sidestand switch (one or two wires running from a small switch that's near where the stand mounts to the bike, follow it up to the first junction and unplug, then plug it back it)

Also, make sure you're trying to start it in neutral, there's another safety switch for that, but the bike will start in neutral.

If all of those are fine, then grab a multi-meter so you can check Volts DC on the battery. See what they are when everything's off, and the bike's just sitting there. Then see what happens when you turn the key to 'on', and finally see what it does when you hit the starter switch. If the battery goes below 10vdc, then you need to either charge the battery or replace it (if it goes below 8vdc, you almost certainly have to replace it).

Other things that aren't as likely, the spark plug failed, plug wire came off/apart somewhere, leads to the coil came off, ECU failed, burnt a hole in the piston, burnt some valves.... but those are all absolutly unlikely on a stock bike, and just a hair shy of unlikely on a bike with stuff like a pipe, jet kit or ignition advance.

Good luck with it.
You need three things, air, fuel, and a spark. Air isn't usually a problem.

Charge the battery. Try to start it. Then pull a sparkplug. Is it wet with fuel? Then your problem is probably electrical. Dry? Then it's probably fuel.
