Motercycle head light? |
i have a motercycle and i need to re-point the headlight on it. i have tryed a couple of times but, at night all oncoming cars flash there brights at me. is there a way to propperly point the headlight ?? is there a way to set my bike back so many feet from a wall and measure up the wall to where the light is pointing ???? please helpme !!!! From Motorcycles: Fundamentals, Service, Repair: Headlight Aim The headlight beam is adjustable both horizontally and veritcally. Headlight aiming must be correctly adjusted for safe riding as well as for oncoming riders. In most areas, it is illegal to ride with improperly adjusted headlights. When making a headlight adjustment make sure the tire pressure is correct and the fuel tank is approximately half full. Park the motorcycle on a level surface with the headlight approx. 25' from a vertical wall. When checking the headlight, the motorcycle must be off its side or center stand and with a rider seated. Measure the distance from the center of the headlight to the ground. Then make a horizontal mark on the wall the same distance from the headlight to the ground to represent the headlight height center. Headlight adjustments are as follows: 1. Vertical adjustment. With the headlight on high beam, the brightest point of light should be 2" below the horizontal mark at a distance of 25' To typically make a vertical adjustment, loosen the headlight mounting bolts, matching the punch mark on the case and the bracket by moving the headlight up or down. SOme motorcycles have an adjusting screw on the bottom. In this case turn the screw to make the vertical adjustment. 2. Horizontal adjustment. Turn the headlight on high beam. The beam should be pointing straight ahead. For those having an adjusting screw on the side of the headlight rim, turn this screw to make the horizontal adjustment. On some models, the headlight is completely encased. The adjustment can be made either with the light beam adjustment knob on the back of the light case or with a remote cable or knob. Refer to the service manual for the proper adjustment method. That took a bit of stamina to type. just aim it a little to the right Usually aiming the light does involve a wall and having your bike upright (not tilted on the kickstand). Not knowing what bike you have, measurements will differ. You can either have a bike shop do it, or for less than the cost of having someone else do it, pick up a repair manual for your bike and it will tell you how to adjust your headlight. (Your operators manual may tell you, but I doubt it.) Hi it needs to offset to the nearside (pavement) about knee level. About 15 feet on a white wall is good for setting. On the positive side, if the car drivers are flashing you at least they've seen you :) |
