Is it legal to turn left after the light turns red? |
It is common for a car to pull themselves into the middle of an intersection to wait for a gap in traffic before turning left. When the light turns yellow and then red, the car finally makes the turn because all other traffic has stopped. Is this legal? My friend was in a bike accident with an SUV that did this and I'm trying to determine if the SUV's turn was actually legal, or just something everyone does. It is illegal in the state of Washington to drive through a red light. The yellow light is given to warn you the light will change soon. It is the drivers responsibility to make sure they are through the intersection before the light turn red. However, high traffic volumes often make it nearly impossible to turn left. Sometimes people are forced to wait until traffic clears after the light turns red. To answer your question: It is illegal, but everyone does it. It happens so offten it is hard for the police to enforce. no...once the light is red, it is illegal to go through it (hence red light cameras)! i know what you're talking about (the car pulling into the center of the intersection) and although i'm not sure about that part, i'm pretty sure it's illegal In California ONE vehicle may turn left after the light turns red. (I know because I missed this one on my last driver's test and asked a patrolman later what the right answer is.) I'm not sure what the law is in other states. I actually asked an officer about this once and he explained that while it is technically illegal, he would probably not pull someone over for it. If you reach a light and think you will probably be able to turn before it is red, you should or else you will have a lot of people honking at you. It depends on where you live. In Georgia it is legal to make a left on red if you are turning from a one way street onto a one way street. Odd I know. However, I do not believe that it is legal to wait in the middle of the intersection, though almost everyone does it. It's the reason for the line demarcation. A lawyer would know better. I believe it is legal to do this as long as you pulled up halfway before the light turned red. After that you are technically in the middle of a turn and are obligated to complete your turn even if the light has turned red. whoever is in the intersection has the right of way if they entered intersection on green light |
