Should I buy this motorcycle? |
Ok, so I need this question answered ASAP (I'm gonna hang around online and see if anybody responds quickly). Alright, I'm about to buy a 1997 Suzuki GSX600F for the summer. It has 13K miles, a signal light broken, needs a new windshield (but not terribly bad, it's only cracked), and needs some new tires. It also has a loud aftermarket exhaust, and K&N air. LED's supposedly, but I haven't checked to see if they work. The guy is offering to sell it for $1650, and I want to know if this is a very good deal for this specific Katana. NADA gives it about a $2200 retail, and a low value of $1750...I'm going to have to work the entire summer to pay it off, and I don't really want to get a bike that I won't be happy with. I'm a beginning rider, and I've read that this bike is very beginner friendly (not too much engine, decent handling, etc.). that bike has been dropped either off the kickstand, from grabbin the front brake at slow speed with the bars turned, or he hit a patch of gravel or oil and dropped it........but this bike has 'dropped' written all over it. u dont just crack a windsheild on a bike like this with droppin it rather hard. loud pipes on a sport bike is a cop magnet for sure. this is also a 10 yr old bike. nada assumes the bike is 100% stock.....and this bike is soooooooo not stock. this scoot has been staged1 and most likely has had the chit ran out of it hard i'd only give him 700 at most. tires aint cheap for starters. if this was in factory stock condition.......yea, it would be noobie friendly. not now. this is now a bike that's geared for the advanced rider....one's that's already had a season or 2 in the saddle. now that bike is going to have alot more power and torque than stock. it's ur cash, do what u want, but this bike to me aint worth more than 700 bucks for it bein 10 yrs old, and obviously dropped hard enough to crack the windsheild. Signal light broken? as in mashed? windshield damage? Id check to see if the thing had a ride on the side. Be carefull, forks or frame could be bent. sounds OK but a little higher than i would pay for a damaged bike offer him more like 1100 then you can put good tires on it. This doesn't sound like much of a bargain to me. Offer him 600.00 and if he doesn't take it, walk away, however I am with "pappy" on this, sounds like the bike was dumped on it's side. Sounds to me (signal light and broken windshield) like it has been dropped at some stage. You might be buying more trouble than you think. Take it to a mechanic and have them look at it before you buy it. If it is an honest deal the seller wont mind. Even if the mechanic charges you something it won't be as bad as buying a bike with a lot of problems. Usually if things seem too good to be true...they are...be careful. As others have said, a 10-year old bike that's been wrecked? It could have damage you can't see such as a tweaked headstock, forks, cracked welds - things below the surface you won't see right away. The price sounds OK for one in decent shape but too high for a wrecked one. The can and filter sound like normal mods for a bike like this and you should enjoy those. Stay off the throttle and it will probably won't attract any unusual attention from Johnny law... Tell him no more than $1000 tops and only after you have a mechanic check it out first for serious or expensive damage. The Katana is a great bike - very solid and reliable, but I'm a little concerned that this will be used as a beginner bike. Tread carefully and caveat emptor! sure i think i would |
