Do you use your rear brake (Sportbikes only)?

This question applies to good road conditions.

On a sportbike why do people use there rear brakes?
The front brake is strong enough to flip the bike.
During hard braking the rear tire can come off the ground and while using both brakes the rear gets light it can lock up causing a high side?

Just curious on others thoughts.

only when coming to slow speed stops-to hold it in place at
corners red lights on hills. its a good idea to get use to
applying the right amount of pressure before it locks
up.
I generally dont use the rear brake. I originally learned how to ride on dirt and used the rear brake alot. I dont want to get into a panic situation on the street and stomp on the rear brake so I tend to not use it.
At the track some use the rear brake for trail braking (not me because I'm not that good yet). by using the rear brake you take some stress off of the front tire (if you were using the front brakes) while leaned over. Trail braking in a turn changes makes the front steeper, enabling you to turn sharper as well as scrub off speed.
I use it all the time. That's what it's there for.

I don't use it in corners or in an emergency stop but for hauling the bike down from a high-speed run on a straight, pre-corner speed adjustments or for regular braking I use it all the time.

Why not use up the pads since I'm carrying them around with me anyway?
using both brakes can slow you or stop you faster than just using one brake you should become familiar with your own bikes braking characteristics so you can Maintain control under heavy braking situations. Although I do most of my braking with the front brake locking up the rear tire is more forgiving than locking up the front.
Absolutly.

The FASTEST a sportbike can stop Requires the use of both front and rear in a linear fashion. Meaning when you First start the braking process, you use 90% rear and 10% front, and quickly change those percentages to 90% front and 10% rear. Most people Already do this with the front brake (if they don't, they'd be locking the front wheel and crashing), adding the rear will reduce the total braking distance a noticeable amount.

I do this because I want my body and mind trained for Emergency situations where ever last milimeter makes a difference.

The rear is also absolutly invaluable for slow-speed manuvers. If you've never done a U-turn with the rear brake (drag it to modulate speed, leave the clutch alone and use whatever throttle opening feels correct), then you'd be Drastically surprised at just how stable, and Tightly, you can make slow speed turns.

So, Absolutly I use the rear brake. And lots. A motorcycle being able to do a stoppie has no bearing on the rear brake being useful.
the rear brake should be applied first ,just barely ahead of the front brake,to work properly.
It's a question on the written mc test here in OH.
