i have a 49cc lifan (generic) scooter... looks just like a honda vino or the like with all the lights and signals .. the dmv asked me if it had a federal certification sticker .. those vin # plates by the front forks on most bikes ... i cant find one, but i dont know where it would be since its a full body scooter (can see the usual location its in) the dmv told me if it doesnt have one i cant register it. what gives??? any tricks ect? i just want to register it!
A lot of these scooters do not have a Vin# when I bought my yamaha I had to register it before I left the lot but the vin# was on the paperwork. If it has all of the lights it needs and is fast enough to keep up with traffic which it probably is on small streets then you can just make yoru own vin#, how do you think people who build dune buggies register then to drive them on the street. You will also need insurance and a plate ut insurance for these is a joke cheap. Look for a stamped/etched VIN# on the frame behind a rectangular cover on the front panel (between your feet) . . and also on the left and right frame in the area above and just behind the engine (may be on the bottom side of the frame tubes).
My DMV would not accept a riveted plate number . . only a permanent stamped/etched 17 character (both letters and numbers) VIN. A properly completed vendor "Certificate Of Origin" (often called an MSO) was also required . . and the frame VIN had to match the certificate information.
