When riding on freeway, I'm scared of wind blowing me off, is it what you wear that helps this?? |
I have been on the freeway twice since I bought my bike last year. I am scared because it feels like I'm going to get knocked off when I go over 60 mph. I think it's because of my heavy leather jacket. This jacket is not those jackets like in The Wild One. It must weigh like 4 to 5 pounds. I'm very light too, I weigh 140 lbs. My question is is it natural to encounter wind regardless of my jacket or is it the jacket?? If clothing's not a factor, what are some tips to ride the freeway? Thanks Leathers will help out in the event (knock on wood) you should fall off, they will keep the road rash down considerably. Especially if your a young rider...wear your helmet. The wind at 60 mph always feels like it's pushing you around, if it worries you simply slow down to a speed your more comfortable with. After your a more experienced rider you may consider a bigger bike. They feel more stable on the road. A fairing will also help. Enjoy riding!!! Buy a windshield or fairing. It makes a big difference. Unless you have no hands on the handles, you cannot be 'blown" off. you didn't specify what kind of bike you have! if its fully faired, then crosswinds are a much bigger problem than headwind, i think all bikers will agree that stiff crosswinds are worse than riding in the rain. Also if you have a cheapo helmet they tend to "lift" and make it feel like your head is being pushed back too. Weight of the bike is a factor too....add info for what bike you own. keep low, hold on tight, and try to minimize your surface area that is exposed to the wind. less drag you create the less you will have to deal with. windshields and solid core rims tend to make bikes harder to control on windy days.... Stay away from the trucks. If you pass them, get it over with quickly. Also, if they pass you, don't lolly gag beside of them, they will suck you under if you aren't careful. Also, give the traffic around you some room, Manage Your Space. It actually takes alot of wind to blow you off the road, but if it bothers you, maybe you need to get more experience before you run the freeway much.... |
