What's a good/durable/light bicycle to buy for recreation?

I'm going to compete in a triathlon this year, but I'm more concerned with having a comfortable bicycle to ride for fun than anything else.

If you are doing a triathlon you are going to need a road bike. Unfortunately, many people find road bikes uncomfortable, but they are the only bike specifically designed for riding mileage on pavement. You could get a hybrid, but it will not serve you well in competition and may leave you wishing you had a bike more specifically designed for the kind of riding you do. I would go to a local shop and get some advice from someone who know the local terrain and scene.
Mine's a Raleigh, and I love it. It's lasted a long time, it's comfortable and easy to ride, and best of all it's light. I have no trouble hanging it upside down on hooks in the garage ceiling, and I'm not that strong. It's a great bike.
Try one of these...

And save your energy for the other two legs of the triathalon.
Hello,

I would get a road bike rather than a tri-specific bike.
There are many brands of good bikes. I would go to your local bike shop and try a few. I would try Trek, Specialized, Cervelo, Raleigh and Lemond bikes.
They have their own geometries and what might be very comfortable to one may not be to you. Best bet is just to ride them and see what you like.
